The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted

Post by pacopepe »

Hello

I was trying to make an mkv from an iso file of a 3D movie and I can't, I always get this errors

Code: Select all

The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
I can open the file with bdinfo or extract content with tsmuxer, but with makemkv it always give this problem.

If instead of trying to open the ISO file I mount it with windows and then try to use the virtual drive, I got this

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.14.3 win(x64-release) started
Backing up disc into folder "C:/Video/backup/PINA_3D"
Downloading latest SDF to C:\Users\Desktop-CRD/.MakeMKV ...
Error 'Scsi error - NO SENSE:NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION' occurred while issuing SCSI command A30..0020..03F to device 'SPTI:\Device\CdRom0'

REPEATED 1000 times

Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:CANNOT READ MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT' occurred while issuing SCSI command AD010..080002400 to device 'SPTI:\Device\CdRom0'

Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
Downloading latest HK to C:\Users\Desktop-CRD/.MakeMKV ...
Saved AACS dump file as C:\Users\Desktop-CRD/.MakeMKV/MKB_v35_PINA_3D_56A6.tgz
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Backup failed.
Any help?

ISO files are missing information needed to find the volume key. You have two options - find a source of that key, or use the original disk to create a file with the information MakeMKV needs.

You can find out more about it in this topic: Ripping an ISO of a disc I own - volume key unknown?

So if I don't have the disc and just the iso, there is nothing I can do at all to recover that key without finding someone with the blu ray that can make me a favour or a public data base (I just searched on one and find nothing for this movie)?

I though that as tsmuxer can open it, it wouldn't have a problem of encryption.

Any idea if I can solve this or it is just a dead end that no software can help?

There are sites that collect BD keys and publish them. You will see references to "key.db" (which MakeMKV can use) in various places. MakeMKV does not generally need it when dealing with original non-UHD BDs, because Mike's figured out how to get the key information directly.

There can be more than one volume key for a particular title, as well; some have dozens. Which means, if you borrow a copy of the same title to generate the key for it, it might not work with the copy that the ISO was created from.

As it is pretty niche (doubt there is on key databases) and I don't own the disc, can be a key generated somehow without having access to the disc and only the iso?

What do you mean you can extract content with tsmuxer? You can produce a watchable video?

Yes, I can extract the content from the br iso and make a mkv to see later or even watch the h264. The problem is the BR is a 3D BR, so it needs the MCV file inside the mkv, and there isn't any single software I know that can work with it to create the remuxed mkv.

makemkv was the only way to create it, but it doesn't work, so I can only have the full br iso for 3d, or make a remxed mkv but losing the 3d

I'm guessing the error message is wrong then. If tsmuxer can make a video, then the data must already be decrypted in the iso. If the data is already decrypted, the volume key isn't needed.

I see now that the error is when makemkv is reading from SPTI:\Device\CdRom0. Perhaps the problem is that makemkv thinks it's reading from an actual BD (we say BD not Br). Instead of mounting the ISO as a "disc", just copy it as a folder.

yes, the iso is decrypted, but makemkv still thinks it isnt.

You mean extracting the iso files to a folder and then which file should I try to open? because I can't see any option to open a folder with everything inside.

And if I extract the iso with 7zip I just see a bunch of .class files and other things non related.

in makemkv, you open the 'BDMV' folder, which is required to exist at the top level of the disc (iso in your case).

I had the same error with Chernobyl Blu-Ray. Restarting the app works.
