MakeMKV is skipping VTS tracks

Post by Ezatoka »

Hey everyone,

I usually rip my DVDs and BluRays and also rip all extras. Then I open the disc in a player so I can name each of the extras.

This way I noticed in the past, that MakeMKV sometimes seem to skip video files.

I used another program then to get the missing tracks and continued.

Now I thought, I just post some logs of a disc where I noticed this again, that two videos aren't found. These two videos are "just" picture galleries, but MakeMKV shouldn't skip anything I would have thought.

Code: Select all

MakeMKV_log:
Debug log started at Fri Dec 06 19:45:51 2019 , written by MakeMKV v1.14.7 win(x64-release)
Using 262272KB for read cache.

within the program when having the disc opened manually:
MakeMKV v1.14.7 win(x64-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as C:\Users\Ezatoka/MakeMKV_log.txt
Using direct disc access mode

Title #4 was added (1 cell(s), 0:00:13)
Title #5 was added (1 cell(s), 0:01:44)
Operation successfully completed
As we can see, VTS 6 and 7 are just skipped without notice. Is there any noticable reason? "Minimum title length (seconds)" is set to 0 in the preferences.

Above the "skip" text is the Debug code. But, no idea what this code means. DVD structures can be very strange. It was the first time (approx 1995) to describe the content with metadata and control the functions and access and put all in an IFO file.

Seen a lot of older DVDs which very bad mastering and access was only possible with other tools by direct reading the VTS VOB file, demux in elementary streams and so on.
Good Luck :)

For example DVDShrink has no problem showing me these tracks, showing them normally like any others:

That's what I say, other tools works, but MakMKV cannot process them.

If you can "backup" (Encrypted) it with DVDShrink you can use "MKVToolsNIX GUI" to add and append the VTS-VOB files, first VOB with add, the other VOBs for the specific VTS with append to create an mkv file. There is no speciic solution, try it.
Good Luck :)

Uhm yes I can do that. But it shouldn't be needed to do that.

I posted this here so maybe there could be found an error which certain tracks on a DVD which MakeMKV would skip so far but shouldn't.

Right now it's only picture galleries, but on other DVDs it could be full movies eventually.

The DVD doesn't even have a CSS encryption, so it's not because of that either.

I used Grauhaar's solution (DVDShrink) and managed to extract some files... They were audio tracks with a still picture, so I exported the thing in WAV, then FLAC and cutted the track in pieces as originally intended...

I guess the "bad mastering" reason is a good one. Volume One has similar audio tracks and MakeMKV managed to extract them perfectly. My problem was with Volume 2.
